WHAT IS DONATED BLOOD USED FOR?

2% of donated blood is utilised to treat people with trauma or road accidents.
4% of donated blood is used for obstetrics purpose. Pregnant women with low iron content are given blood to improve haemoglobin count & restore blood loss post delivery.
10% of donated blood is used for orthopaedic purpose. Incase of any bone injury or surgery transfused blood is used.
13% of donated blood is used for patients with medical problems (heart, liver, kidney) who need filtered blood on a regular basis.
18% of donated blood is used for critical surgery purpose. To compensate the blood loss in open surgery blood transfusion is needed.
To nurse cancer patients most of the donated blood is required. Cancer patients may need platelets (one of the blood components) if their bone marrrow stops functioning. 34% of donated blood is used for this purpose.
