More new mutations of coronavirus are emerging. Besides the delta plus variant, a new mutation is added to the list- the Lambda variant.
World Health Organization classifies Lambda as a variant of interest, meaning it carries a mutation suspected of causing a change in transmissibility or causing more severe disease, but still under investigation.
Lambda variant has spread to at least 30 countries around the world and is known to be more resistant to neutralizing antibodies compared to other strains.
In a recent call with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), disease experts said Lambda variant did not appear to be causing increased transmissibility and vaccines appear to be holding it up well against it.
But as per Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House's chief medical advisor, mass vaccination is important to reduce the infection rates.
More the number of unvaccinated people more will be the opportunity to spread and mutate into new variants.
